What should I tell my child or teen prior to coming in for therapy?
Children and teens manage best when they have an explanation for why they are meeting with a therapist. It is generally best to frame the treatment as a way for the family to address a challenge that the child, teen, or family is facing. Dr. Groth can assist you with specific explanations that fit your child’s or family’s reason for treatment or evaluation. It is important to communicate to the child or teen that the family will work together to manage difficulties, and NOT to communicate that he/she is the “problem”.
